Bostonian Society is incorporated.

December 2, 1881

Originally the Boston Antiquarian Club, it is founded by William Whitmore and others. Its original purpose is to prevent the Old State House from being sold and moved to Chicago, and its purchase and preservation of the building is credited with sparking the preservation movement in Boston. The Old State House opens as a museum on July 11, 1882. It is renovated by George Clough in 1882, Joseph Chandler in 1907, Perry, Shaw & Hepburn in 1943, and Goody, Clancy and Associates, in 1992.
